NASA Space At the time, some astronomers suggested a collision with another object could’ve caused the asteroid to start spouting off, but a new paper from an international team of researchers concludes that Gault was actually ready to come apart, perhaps even without an impact to trigger the breakdown.”This self-destruction event is rare,” co-author Olivier Hainaut from the European Southern Observatory, explained in a release. “Active and unstable asteroids such as Gault are only now being detected by means of new survey telescopes that scan the entire sky, which means asteroids such as Gault that are misbehaving cannot escape detection any more.” The paper will be published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. The images from Hubble show Gault being trailed by two narrow tails of debris, indicating the material was thrown off in a pair of short bursts lasting between a few hours and a few days. Two narrow, cometlike tails of debris indicate that the asteroid is slowly undergoing self-destruction. NASA, ESA, K. Meech and J. Kleyna (University of Hawaii), O. Hainaut (European Southern Observatory) We first noted in January that an asteroid discovered decades ago was showing signs of transforming into a comet, but now astronomers using NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope say the space rock may be completely falling apart. The 2.5-mile-wide (4-kilometer-wide) asteroid 6478 Gault is located in the asteroid belt between Jupiter and Mars, where it was first seen in 1988. Though it’s been observed by telescopes many times over the decades, it wasn’t until last November that scientists saw signs something was changing. By January, Gault had developed a cometlike tail of dust extending over 249,000 miles (400,000 kilometers). Sci-Tech Tags Post a comment There are around 800,000 known asteroids in the asteroid belt beyond Mars, but astronomers estimate that this kind of crack-up happens only once per year. The asteroid’s fragile state is attributed to something called the Yarkovsky-O’Keefe-Radzievskii-Paddack effect, or YORP torque. The basic idea is that electromagnetic radiation from the sun interacts with small objects like asteroids in ways that can cause them to spin faster and faster, becoming more and more unstable. “It could have been on the brink of instability for 10 million years. Even a tiny disturbance, like a small impact from a pebble, might have triggered the recent outbursts,” explained lead author Jan Kleyna from the University of Hawaii.Astronomers say the tails will begin to fade in the coming months as the dust disperses into space. That is, unless 6478 Gault continues to fall apart before our eyes. Share your voice 0

Marchionne was in a critical condition at Zurich’s University Hospital for complications after undergoing a surgical procedure on his right shoulder early this month.”Unfortunately, what we feared has come to pass. Sergio Marchionne, man and friend, is gone,” FCA chairman John Elkann, of the controlling Agnelli family, said in a statement. The deteriorating health condition of Marchionne prompted Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) to replace him with the head of Jeep and Ram brands, Mike Manley, on July 22. Sergio MarchionneSergio Marchionne was known for his masterstroke that saw the merger of the auto industry’s weakest companies — Fiat and Chrysler — in 2014. Marchionne joined Fiat in 2004. During his tenure at Fiat, Marchionne boosted the company’s value more than tenfold. In November, Realtors sold 5,706 single-family homes, 1,055 more than the same month a year ago, according to a monthly report from the Houston Association of Realtors. That’s a 22.7 percent increase.Tim Surratt, a real estate agent with Greenwood King Properties, said that’s great news, “but if we go back two years, it’s really only a 10 percent increase. In 2015, we were still having some instability for the oil prices and all of that. And so it looks like our market is very stabilized here in Houston.”He said the recovery is also finally having an effect on the sales of homes above $500,000.They jumped 32.5 percent from November 2015 – the first time this category saw an increase in sales in more than a year.“People are just feeling confident to get back into the market,” Surrat said. “They kind of sat on the sidelines to see if prices would come down, and they absolutely have not come down. And because of that, they couldn’t put off those purchases any longer.”The median price for a single-family home in Greater Houston went up by 8.3 percent from a year ago, to $222,000, a record for a November. 00:00 /01:01
Gender stereotyping in baby boys and girls may start as young as three months and men recognise gender of the new-born babies based on the pitch of their cries, researchers reveal. Adults often wrongly assume babies with higher-pitched cries as females and lower-pitched cries as males. The findings revealed that inspite of no actual difference in pitch between the voices of girls and boys before puberty, the study found that adults make assumptions about the gender of babies based on their cries. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’“It is intriguing that gender stereotyping can start as young as three months, with adults attributing degrees of femininity and masculinity to babies solely based on the pitch of their cries,” said David Reby from the University of Sussex in Britain. The team recorded the spontaneous cries of 15 boys and 13 girls who were on average four months old and the participating adults were a mixture of parents and non-parents.They synthetically altered the pitch of the cries while leaving all other features of the cries unchanged to ensure they could isolate the impact of the pitch alone. Also Read – Leslie doing new comedy special with NetflixThe results also indicate that men assume that boy babies are in more discomfort than girl babies with the same pitched cry which may indicate that this sort of gender stereotyping is more ingrained in men. “The research shows that we tend to wrongly attribute what we know about adults —that men have lower pitched voices than women — to babies, when, in fact, the pitch of children’s voices does not differ between sexes until puberty,” added Nicolas Mathevon from Hunter College in the US in the paper published in the journal BMC Psychology.

Free Webinar | Sept 5: Tips and Tools for Making Progress Toward Important Goals Attend this free webinar and learn how you can maximize efficiency while getting the most critical things done right. Brought to you by Business on Main Yes, viruses, worms, phishing and other horrible-sounding threats make for a dangerous world out there for your computer network. But there’s comfort in the fact that 84 percent of network attacks are considered preventable with simple security measures.Yet to be convinced that you need to take protective measures? Then consider the following:It takes 20 minutes for an unprotected computer to get infected after it’s been hooked up to the internet.Forty percent of passwords can be cracked within one hour.In 2007, 127 million personal records were either lost or stolen. Now that I’ve made you aware that something must be done, it’s good to know that protecting your computers doesn’t need to be expensive or complicated. In fact, just like in the physical world, it mostly requires some basic common sense. Below are the four critical tools for locking your computer network up tight.Antivirus software. In my opinion, antivirus software should be mandatory, like car insurance–you can’t get a computer without it. Yes, antivirus software has historically been a royal pain in the processor. It was costly, it updated itself all the time and it would slow your computer to a crawl. But I see antivirus protection as being like flossing: It sucks, but think what you may lose without it. Besides, there are some free (yes, free) antivirus programs that are top-notch, such as AVG (which also has a pay version). And the performance drags have drastically improved in the last year or two, especially with products like Symantec’s Norton Internet Security . Get something on every system in your company and keep it up to date. It’s basic hygiene.Firewall. For both individual PCs and networks, firewalls are must-haves. These are simple programs that, based on a certain set of rules, examine the traffic coming in and out of your computer or network and block any unauthorized access. It’s like having a lock and peephole on your front door. Many internet security software packages, such as Symantec’s, have firewalls built in. Check Point Software Technologies , probably the most recognized brand in the firewall business, also markets a free version of its basic firewall software called ZoneAlarm .Get a VPN. If you or your employees ever access the company servers remotely, you need a virtual private network (VPN). A VPN simply creates an encrypted tunnel between your PC and the network, so that anything you send between the two is protected. It sounds more complicated than it is. And there are free versions of this as well, including Alonweb and PacketiX VPN . Some of these free versions hit you with advertising, but that’s nothing you can’t handle.Passwords, passwords, passwords. I’m not just talking about passwords to log on to the network or a website. Those are obvious. But did you know that your hard drive can (and should) be password-protected? Did you know that you can require your employees to enter a password before they download anything onto their system? And did you know that those passwords must all be different; change regularly; include letters, numbers and symbols; and in general be really difficult to guess? It’s called password strength, and for more on how to make a weak password stronger, see this handy reference guide .How well you protect your network will depend on how well your employees adhere to the guidelines. And sometimes just educating them on good, safe computing habits (like not clicking on links in e-mails from unknown sources or downloading anything from an untrusted site) is not enough. So a little security technology can go a long way toward helping you sleep at night. And most of it won’t cost you a thing, which will also help you sleep. 4 min read July 16, 2010 Register Now »
