It touched down in November and has since snapped lovely landscapes, deployed a seismometer and unleashed a burrowing heat probe known as the “mole.” Everything was going great until the mole got stuck under the surface in February.NASA and the German Aerospace Center (DLR), whose engineers designed the heat probe (also known as the Heat and Physical Properties Package, or HP3), have come up with an initial plan to help crack the mystery of why the mole isn’t moving.NASA and DLR both issued updates on the project on Thursday. One big question is whether the mole hit a single rock or came up against a gravel layer. There’s also some concern the probe itself or its cable could be hung up on something inside the housing that’s supposed to protect it. The InSight team now plans to conduct a hammering test lasting up to 15 minutes later this month. The lander’s seismometer will listen to the mole and hopefully pick up clues about what stopped its progress.InSight will also train its camera on the mole’s above-ground support structure to look for movement. The mole is designed to burrow down as far as 16 feet (5 meters), but only made it a matter of inches before stopping.If the InSight team can solve the puzzle of what’s hiding there under the surface of Mars, it may be able to revive the mole’s mission to explore the hidden inner life of the Red Planet.last_img read more

first_img NASA Space At the time, some astronomers suggested a collision with another object could’ve caused the asteroid to start spouting off, but a new paper from an international team of researchers concludes that Gault was actually ready to come apart, perhaps even without an impact to trigger the breakdown.”This self-destruction event is rare,” co-author Olivier Hainaut from the European Southern Observatory, explained in a release. “Active and unstable asteroids such as Gault are only now being detected by means of new survey telescopes that scan the entire sky, which means asteroids such as Gault that are misbehaving cannot escape detection any more.” The paper will be published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters.   The images from Hubble show Gault being trailed by two narrow tails of debris, indicating the material was thrown off in a pair of short bursts lasting between a few hours and a few days. Hainaut (European Southern Observatory) We first noted in January that an asteroid discovered decades ago was showing signs of transforming into a comet, but now astronomers using NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope say the space rock may be completely falling apart.The 2.5-mile-wide (4-kilometer-wide) asteroid 6478 Gault is located in the asteroid belt between Jupiter and Mars, where it was first seen in 1988. Though it’s been observed by telescopes many times over the decades, it wasn’t until last November that scientists saw signs something was changing. By January, Gault had developed a cometlike tail of dust extending over 249,000 miles (400,000 kilometers). The asteroid’s fragile state is attributed to something called the Yarkovsky-O’Keefe-Radzievskii-Paddack effect, or YORP torque. The basic idea is that electromagnetic radiation from the sun interacts with small objects like asteroids in ways that can cause them to spin faster and faster, becoming more and more unstable.  “It could have been on the brink of instability for 10 million years. Even a tiny disturbance, like a small impact from a pebble, might have triggered the recent outbursts,” explained lead author Jan Kleyna from the University of Hawaii.Astronomers say the tails will begin to fade in the coming months as the dust disperses into space. In another major turn of horrific events, Fatima Ibrahim, the wife of millionaire-turned-suicide bomber Inshaf Ahmed Ibrahim, blew herself with her unborn baby and three kids after the police raided their residence. Three policemen were also killed in the incident.Inshaf, 33, along with his brother Ilham Ahmed Ibrahim, 31, were behind the blasts at churches and hotels in the island nation which killed 359 people and injuring many more on April 21.Fatima, the intelligence sources said, is believed to have been present amid a group of veiled suicide bombers swearing allegiance to the Islamic State, whose images were released by the jihadist organisation on Tuesday night. Adults often wrongly assume babies with higher-pitched cries as females and lower-pitched cries as males.The findings revealed that inspite of no actual difference in pitch between the voices of girls and boys before puberty, the study found that adults make assumptions about the gender of babies based on their cries. Also Read – ‘Playing Jojo was emotionally exhausting’“It is intriguing that gender stereotyping can start as young as three months, with adults attributing degrees of femininity and masculinity to babies solely based on the pitch of their cries,” said David Reby from the University of Sussex in Britain. The team recorded the spontaneous cries of 15 boys and 13 girls who were on average four months old and the participating adults were a mixture of parents and non-parents.They synthetically altered the pitch of the cries while leaving all other features of the cries unchanged to ensure they could isolate the impact of the pitch alone.  Also Read – Leslie doing new comedy special with NetflixThe results also indicate that men assume that boy babies are in more discomfort than girl babies with the same pitched cry which may indicate that this sort of gender stereotyping is more ingrained in men. “The research shows that we tend to wrongly attribute what we know about adults —that men have lower pitched voices than women — to babies, when, in fact, the pitch of children’s voices does not differ between sexes until puberty,” added Nicolas Mathevon from Hunter College in the US in the paper published in the journal BMC Psychology.last_img read more
