Resigned to being out for an extended time, he opted to have surgery to remove a bone spur in his right wrist that had bothered him “on and off for two years – it was time to get it fixed.”“The back just tightened up during one game. I was fine the very next day,” said Gyorko, who batted .196 in 38 games with the Cardinals this season. “I guess they had a roster decision they had to make and it just built up from there. Then I was about to come back and the calf flared up so while I was out I had my wrist fixed too. Just kind of re-starting everything. Now everything feels really good. Looking back, it sucked, but now I’m happy with the decision I made.”ALSOOutfielder Alex Verdugo was scratched from Thursday’s starting lineup with left knee soreness.UP NEXTPadres (LHP Eric Lauer, 5-8, 4.52 ERA) at Dodgers (RHP Dustin May, MLB debut), Friday, 7:10 p.m., SportsNet LA (where available), 570 AM How Dodgers pitcher Ross Stripling topped the baseball podcast empire Dodgers hit seven home runs, sweep Colorado Rockies Dodgers’ Max Muncy trying to work his way out of slow start center_img Pederson’s time at first base coincided with an overall defensive “slump” by the Dodgers. They made 24 errors in 17 games before Thursday (four by Pederson).Cody Bellinger has started just one game at first base since injuring his left shoulder on a diving attempt there during the Dodgers’ May 3 game in San Diego. The Dodgers feared his shoulder (which popped out of its socket and had done so in the past) would be in greater danger of re-injury at first base than in the outfield. But Bellinger was wearing a first baseman’s glove and taking grounders at the position during Thursday’s pre-game workout. Roberts said Bellinger would now be an option to play first base again.“We talked to Cody. He’s done a great job keeping his shoulder healthy and keeping it strong,” Roberts said. “It was great to give Joc a runway at first. Could it happen again this season? Possibly. But to get Cody over there which he feels very good about and certain times get him back in right field against left-handed pitching if we want to get Muncy at first base, to move Joc back to left field – that’s a decision we’ve made going forward.”ANOTHER FIRST BASEMANLeft-hander Adam Kolarek was officially added to the roster Thursday after being acquired from the Tampa Bay Rays before Wednesday’s deadline. LOS ANGELES — Who’s on first? Not Joc Pederson any time soon.Dodgers manager Dave Roberts acknowledged Thursday that the experiment of playing Pederson at first is over “for now.”“For now, yeah,” Roberts repeated. “I think the benefit that we have now is – we’ve seen it, we’ve given him an opportunity and this is something that Joc was asking for. For us to oblige and give him that runway, give him that opportunity to see how it looks – he’s worked his tail off to get better at first base. So I really applaud him.”Pederson might deserve praise for his effort and willingness to try and learn a new position. But the results were not good. In 20 games at first, Pederson was charged with six errors. A number of plays that didn’t show up as errors also went unmade because of his inexperience at the position. Cody Bellinger homer gives Dodgers their first walkoff win of season Kolarek will be used as a lefty specialist out of the bullpen – but he also played first base for two-thirds of an inning with the Rays this season. Roberts said he could see a scenario where Kolarek would come in to face a left-handed batter, move to first base if the next batter is right-handed and return to pitching against a left-hander.“Sure. Why not?” Roberts said. “I know he played first base in college (at the University of Maryland) and he’s played first base in the big leagues a little bit too. There might be a time when we see him on the mound, then pivot over there to first base then take the mound again. We’ll see.”Left-hander Caleb Ferguson was returned to Triple-A Oklahoma City to make room for Kolarek on the roster.GYORKO STATUSThe Dodgers’ other trade-deadline acquisition, infielder Jedd Gyorko, joined them in L.A. on Thursday. Gyorko is currently on the 60-day IL and is not eligible to be activated until next Wednesday.Gyorko will start a rehab assignment in Double-A Tulsa on Saturday and eventually move to Triple-A Oklahoma City before he is activated.“I think a lot of it is just going to depend on how I feel, how things progress,” Gyorko said. “I don’t want to say a certain date because you never know. But I would expect a week to 10 days (on a rehab assignment would be enough).“I don’t have any concerns going out on rehab. I feel like I’m ready to go out and play.”Related Articleslast_img read more
