Several students attached to the Linden Foundation Secondary School have benefited from a ‘back to school’ initiative organised by the non-profit organisation Linden Fund USA, in collaboration with Maureen Davidson.Twenty-five students have received free backpacks and school supplies as the new school year commences today. Speaking at the distribution drive, which was held at the Linden Foundation Secondary School, Office Manager of the Linden Fund USA’s local affiliate, LFU Guyana Inc, Cheryl Waite, said the items are to assist students in the preparation for effective and efficient functioning in their classrooms. She urged them to make good use of the opportunity.Waite also reaffirmed the Organisation’s commitment to revitalising communities in Linden, especially in the education and health sectors.Speaking on behalf of Maureen Davidson was Leroy James, who charged the students to make the best of their school days.“School time is also a time when you are to make the most of the opportunitiesSome of the recipients of the back-to-school drive on in Lindenthat are afforded. We should glean as much as we can, so that we can secure for ourselves a brighter future. The students here, I am sure that you can look around and see things in your home circle that you wish you could improve. Well, please understand that your being at school is one of the first step towards improving that”, he posited.The school’s Home Economics Department also received donations of much need items, including a blender and crockery and cutlery, among other items.In 2017, Davidson, wife of The Right Reverend Charles A. Davidson, Diocesan Bishop of Guyana, Suriname and Cayenne, undertook a new outreach initiative to provide school supplies to needy students in the Greater Georgetown area.Realizing her vision to assist students in the Kingston area, the outreach was expanded to Linden schools in the form of a joint project with the US-based non-profit Linden Fund USA and its local affiliate, LFU Guyana Inc.On August 30, students of the Kingston Practical Instruction Centre were also presented backpacks and school supplies for the second year in a row, while students of St. George’s Secondary School will receive school supplies for the first time.In addition to LFU support, this project was made possible by funding from local donors, including the Guyana Bank for Trade and Industry, Republic Bank, the Ministry of the Presidency, Anita Rambaran, Dr Barton Scotland, Shonel Benjamin and Rohni Charanram from Payless Variety Store, Beepats, National Hardware, and a local doctor.
The South African financial system continued to be sound during the first half of the year, according to the latest edition of the Financial Stability Review, released by the SA Reserve Bank (SARB).The publication, which focuses on the six months to June 2007, is part of SARB’s efforts to encourage debate on financial stability issues and enhance the understanding of the financial system by highlighting its strengths and weaknesses.According to the Financial Stability Review, the resilience of financial markets globally was severely tested during the past few months following the widespread impact of negative developments in the United States’ housing market, and the subprime mortgage market in particular.Global markets generally experienced considerable volatility and illiquidity and there are signs that borrowers will face tighter terms and conditions, which could harm global economic growth.Emerging market economies in general have proven to be resilient to the financial market turmoil following the subprime crisis, SARB said it review.South African financial institutions have very little exposure to the United States’ subprime lending industry or to securities with subprime loans as underlying assets. Any direct impact of the subprime mortgage turmoil on the South African financial system is likely to be negligible.Based on an analysis of selected financial soundness indicators, SARB found that the South African financial system remained sound during the period under review. Overall confidence in the financial services sector remained high and confidence in the banking sector was confirmed by the high level of the retail banking confidence index.SARB believes that South African banks were well capitalised, but the country’s banking sector remained highly concentrated. The insurance industry remained strong although there are concerns about deteriorating profitability and a high loss ratio. Despite strong growth in household indebtedness the financial position of households remained sound given strong growth in disposable income and financial assets.The moderation in the level of activity in the residential property market continued and could be extended further by the relatively high level of household debt that is limiting the ability of households to accumulate more debt.The review concluded that the South African financial regulatory system is undergoing continuous change and legislative reform in an effort to maintain an appropriate level of financial regulation.Useful linksSA Reserve Bank: www.reservebank.co.za
Learn how to creatively flatten cinematic images for your next video production by using profile framing.Top image: Batman via WarnerIn the visual medium of filmmaking, it’s often too easy to accidentally flatten the imagery and perspectives. After all, the end result will be projected, or viewed, on a flat screen. For this reason, filmmakers and videographers often fight against flat imagery by invoking depth and perspective shots in their work. But flattening your images can be done simply and creatively. Let’s consider a couple of approaches.Suppressed IdentityWhen it comes to staging and framing the human subjects of your movie, it’s often preferable to set your camera at an angle to the subject’s position. This not only allows the viewer to see the subject’s face in its full expressive capacity, but it also creates a sense of dimension in the facial features.One of the flattest ways to frame your subject is from the side, with the individual in profile. Framed in this way, the subject is suddenly imbued with a visual tension that can connect directly to the content of your film. In the George Lucas film, THX 1138 (both images above via Warner), the main character, played by Robert Duvall, is actively fighting against the flattened identity preferred by the repressive future society in which he resides.Hidden IdentityIn Hitchcock’s Vertigo, the character of Madeleine (as played by Kim Novak) is first glimpsed by Scottie (James Stewart) in profile (see above image via Paramount), lending a mystery to her actual identity.In The Pervert’s Guide to Cinema, Slavoj Žižek identifies this perspective as Scottie’s fear of fully seeing Madeleine. This fear permits Scottie to fill in Madeleine’s partial identity with his own subjective fantasies. This partial identity enlists the audience into participating in the subjective character creation.Although this example from Hitchcock is clearly an example of Laura Mulvey’s concept of the male gaze in all three manifestations, the takeaway is how the profile shot can become a means for filmmakers and videographers to interrogate the identity of characters within the story world from both the perspective of the other characters and the eventual viewers of the finished film.Conjoined IdentitiesWhen another person is added to the profile shot, the effect becomes more complicated. A dual profile can be a way of joining characters together at their most flattened, as seen above in Minority Report (via 20th Century Fox), whereas staging one character in profile and the second character facing forward can both join and disconnect characters, depending on the context. As seen below, Akira Kurosawa and Ingmar Bergman made great use of profile framing throughout their work.Red Beard via CriterionPersona via CriterionThe Silence via CriterionThe dual profile can be used to clearly signify conflict and battling perspectives especially when conjuring the art associated with comics and graphic novels. As in the 1989 Batman (top image), character motivations, when rendered in profile, can become clearly oppositional, more direct, and less emotive. The result is a more animalistic and brutal depiction of onscreen characters.ConclusionThe ambiguity that results from profile framing can be used to build up to a visual release in the emotional states of the onscreen characters by less two dimensional means. Hitchcock reverses the flattened perspective of the profile shots when he employs a circular dolly shot late in Vertigo (via Paramount).There are plenty of other ways to cinematically flatten your image. High key lighting is a very common technique that tends to reduce the dimensionality of shadows and smooths out the facial features of your subjects.Telephoto lenses flatten perspective and can be used to visually reduce the proximity between subjects in the shot. Telephoto lenses can also make it seem like your character is on a road to nowhere.But when it comes to simple, dramatic flattening, profile framing can be used to great effect to veil the identities and emotions of your onscreen subjects.What are your favorite examples of profile framing?
