Harris, who is also correspondent in Sri Lanka for the geopolitical magazine Jane’s Intelligence Review, said he was leaving the country on 8 November on the advice of the British embassy. He has worked in Sri Lanka since last November and had routinely applied for an annual visa renewal on 30 September. The government did not respond and has since refused to explain its attitude.Harris told Reporters Without Borders he was being targeted for his critical reporting of peace negotiations between the government and the Tamil Tiger separatists, who he said may have pressured the government not to renew his visa.He was asked to speak publicly to opposition members of parliament after he wrote an article in Jane’s Intelligence Review in May. He was subsequently called an “agent of the British MI5 intelligence service” by minister Rajitha Senaratne.A week later, the government ordered a secret investigation of him, Harris said. Staff at his hotel were questioned, his room searched and his movements closely watched. For the past week, he had been intimidated and harassed by armed men. President Bush’s campaign to convince Americans that the government’s eavesdropping program is essential to the war on terrorism has made an impact: Last month, people disapproved, 56percent to 42percent. Now it’s basically 50-50. Bush has been particularly successful at making his case to core supporters, including Republicans, white evangelicals and suburban men. Support in each category grew more than 10 percentage points in the last month. The AP-Ipsos poll findings came as the White House relented and provided some new details to the House and Senate Intelligence Committees about the program. At Bush’s direction, the National Security Agency has been monitoring communications between people overseas and in the United States when links to terrorism are suspected. – Associated Press
A lichen is a symbiotic organism comprised of an alga and a fungus. PNAS1 reported a study that showed that “antioxidant and photoprotective mechanisms in the lichen Cladonia vulcani are more effective by orders of magnitude than those of its isolated partners” (emphasis added in all quotes). Kranner et al. found:Without the fungal contact, the alga tolerates only very dim light and its photoprotective system is only partially effective; without the alga, the glutathione-based antioxidant system of the fungus is slow and ineffective. In the lichen, this mutually enhanced resistance to oxidative stress and, in particular, its desiccation tolerance are essential for life above ground. This lifestyle, in turn, increases the chance of dispersal of reproductive propagules and ensures their joint evolutionary success.1Kranner et al., “Antioxidants and photoprotection in a lichen as compared with its isolated symbiotic partners,” Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences USA, 10.1073/pnas.0407716102, published online before print February 14, 2005.Take out the word “evolutionary,” because the findings only show reproductive success. Survivability does not necessarily imply advancement in complexity; it could just as well reflect good design. Lichens are often the pioneer organisms in a new habitat. They contribute to the breakdown of rock and formation of soil. Mosses, ferns and other organisms follow sometimes, and before long, a whole community of plants and animals can come to town. In the fjords of New Zealand, for example, this happens on sheer cliff faces of rock. After some years or decades of initial colonization by lichens, large trees can take root in the near-vertical cliffs. Lichens show tremendous variety in form and structure. Some are beautifully colored. The Dec. 2004 Creation Research Society Quarterly has a photo essay about lichens and their microscopic structure. For them, it’s not you, or your company, or your solution that concerns them. They are concerned about almost everything. The people who are grouchy aren’t grouchy because you called them. They were grouchy before you called them, and they’ll be grouchy the next day, and the day after that. They are grouchy people. The people who are cheap aren’t just cheap when it comes from buying what you sell. They’re always cheap, refusing to believe that anything else equals value. When cheap things fail cheap people, they buy the next cheap thing. The thing that makes cheap people is that they are cheap. The people who are skeptical don’t believe what you are saying. They don’t believe what anyone says. To the skeptic, everything is suspect—and so is everyone. The skeptic doesn’t trust you because they don’t trust anyone. The people who already know everything can’t take on any new information. There is no room for new ideas, even if they are valuable. They don’t know everything about their business or your business or some other thing. They know everything about everything. This is what makes them the people who already know everything. The people who are fiercely loyal can always be counted on to be fiercely loyal. They’re not just loyal to your competitor. They’re loyal to all the people to whom they are loyal. You hope someday they are loyal to you.The people who don’t have time now never have time. It’s not that they don’t perceive value in what you are offering to trade for time. They don’t value anything more than being the people who don’t have time. The people who go dark to avoid conflict and fear being sold avoid having to tell people no and choose instead to disappear. You are not the first person they have avoided. They avoid everyone who might require they say yes or no.The people who are perpetually unsatisfied are never satisfied. That’s what makes the perpetually unsatisfied. If they could ever be satisfied, they wouldn’t be who they are.The people who refuse to change even in the face of overwhelming evidence that they need to change. They still have a fax machine next to their desk because it’s worked perfectly well for more than two decades. If they were willing to change, they would not be the people who refuse to change. It’s easy to believe that how a person appears to you is their response to you. But often, maybe most of the time, the person is who they are, and how they appear has nothing to do with you.
